Fall of 2010 will mark the debut of Evironmental Education Camp at Living River.  Drawing on the best curricula and knowledge available, a set of unrivalled natural resources, and the Presbytery's wealth of programming expertise, it promises to offer an experience like no other.

With its central location, four miles of waterfront on one of the most ecologically important rivers in the eastern United States, and a great diversity of flora, fauna and bird life, Living River offers unparalleled opportunities for environmental study, scientific research and environmental stewardship training.

The Cahaba River, which embraces most of Living River's 440 acres, is packed with environmental treasures, providing infiinte opportunities for study.  As a member of the community of groups and advocates that seek to protect and preserve the Cahaba, Living River will have additional sources of knowledge and support to strengthen its environmental programs.

There are also many environmental treasures lying within the bounds of Living River's waterline--at the river's edge grows an abundance of indigenous, old-growth trees, a rare find in a region where clear-cutting is common.  And further in from the waterline lie the woods and hills of Living River, which contain a great diversity of plant and animal life.  Living River will use these resources to help campers develop a better understanding of and respect for the environment that will remain with them all their lives.

Possible topics of study and research could include:

  • bird watching and identification
  • wildflower and tree identification
  • aquatic plant study
  • geology studies

In addition to offering its own environmental programs, the Presbytery will also work, whenever possible, with other organizations that seek to study and research Living River's natural resources in a manner consistent with the Presbytery's mission of promoting good stewardship and understanding of God's creation.
